Week 8: September 30 - October 4

This week in ELAR: September 30 - October 4


Reading Workshop:
This week on Wednesday, we will take our final test of the 9 weeks. We will continue to work with Plot by diagramming the key ideas in our most recent Interactive Read Aloud, "A Dance Like Starlight." Students will then choose one of our IRA from the year, and practice diagramming on their own.


Writing Workshop: 
Students will continue to draft their Personal Narratives along with bumping up their sentences as they revise. This week we will learn how to incorporate Transitional Phrases within our writing, as well as checking for a plot within our stories.

Reading Workshop: 

This week we study about the Plot in a story. Students will look at how authors reveal the storyline through events, problems, and solutions.

We will discuss where these elements fit in to our previous understanding of the Beginning, Middle, and End of a story.

Writing Workshop:

Students will continue to create their LEADS for their Personal Narratives. They will also work on drafting their Personal Narratives by revising sentences within their paragraphs to make them stronger and more vivid.

ELAR WEEK 6: September 16 - September 20

WEEK 6: September 16 - September 20


Reading Workshop:

This week we will learn about Comparing and Contrasting. We will look at books we have previously read, as well as books we have read independently to discuss how the compare, or how they differ. Students will continue to discuss characters and the messages of the author in their texts by looking at ways they are alike and different.

Interactive Read Aloud:

Students will begin the test on Thursday, September 19 with a read aloud, and complete the test through video response for Part 2 on Friday, September 20.  

Writing Workshop:

We have been Pre-Writing using the graphic organizer, Boxes and Bullets. Students will continue through this Pre-Writing process, move on to choosing that one moment they have written in their brainstorming, and then begin the drafting process. We will also look at how we as authors, want those in our stories, to be portrayed; by focusing on their feelings we bring out through our own writing.

This Week in ELAR: Week 5 ~ September 9 - September 13

WEEK 5: September 9 - September 13


Reading Workshop: 
This week we will learn how to look at a piece of text and connect with it by getting to know the characters, their feelings, and how to think about the deeper ideas in the text. Connections we will look for are: Text to Text, Text to Self, and Text to World. Students will continue to annotate their ideas from their own independent reading as well as annotate along with our Interactive Read Aloud. We will also take time to Partner Talk about our ideas and connections we are making with the different texts.


Interactive Read Aloud: "Better Than You"


Writing Workshop: 
This week we will continue to use the graphic organizer "Boxes and Bullets" as we work through the pre-writing process of a Personal Narrative. Students have been brainstorming ideas about the important people in their lives and the small moments with them that they could turn into a strong story. This week we will add in the special places in our lives, and the small moments that have happened there as well.

Grammar Talks: 
This week we will focus on Capitalization and Vivid Verbs in a sentence and learn how to create those in our own writing.

Homework DUE

Homework booklets were given out on Thursday, September 5. The first page is due, Thursday, September 12. 

We will plan to discuss it on Friday, September 13.

Reading Workshop: 

This week we will be finishing up "Junkyard Wonders". We will continue to annotate our thinking and partner talk as we discuss the story. Students will also use the text to understand the author's true message to the reader. Students have been learning that as "experienced readers" we look for the deeper meaning in an author's purpose.


Writing Workshop:

This week we will begin to incorporate our handwriting, as well as continue to distinguish between the different writing styles of - Literary Responses vs. Essay Writing.
